A Modest Proposal For A Fair and Affordable EV Road Use Tax

From "Welcome to The Nevada Forum!"

Go to the project

The legislature should adopt and implement an electric vehicle road-use tax modeled after those in Utah, Oregon, and Washington State, taxing EVs at 1.2 cents per mile with a maximum annual cap of $144 (12,000 miles per registration year), either through an annual odometer reading at registration renewal or via vehicle telematics. This proposal is fair and non-punitive for EV owners and would offset state and local road maintenance costs in lieu of ICE vehicle fuel taxes. EV owners who drive fewer than 12,000 miles per registration year would pay less. I also suggest allocating a portion of the proposed RUT's revenues to repair and maintain NDOT-installed DC fast chargers on Nevada Electric Highway routes, many of which have been abandoned.
