Clean, Affordable Energy

From "Welcome to The Nevada Forum!"

We need to invest in commu inity and building design that use less energy, saving us all money and reducing pollution. And we need to invest in energy strategies that accelerate clean renewable energy like solar and geothermal that benefit Nevada families, not utility investors.

Good points, thank you. We could implement the green building code for new construction and remodels, and permitting reform to speed new renewable energy projects.

Nevada ranks among the worst states in the nation for air pollution, with 93% of residents living in counties that receive at least one failing air quality grade. This pollution harms everyone, but children are especially vulnerable—suffering from lower lung capacity, higher asthma rates, and more frequent hospitalizations for breathing problems. Bad air doesn’t just affect health; it limits outdoor activities, drives up medical costs, and lowers quality of life for families across the state. If Nevada truly wants to protect its people and its environment, it must reduce its dependence on methane-emitting natural gas and move faster toward clean, renewable energy. Unfortunately, NV Energy’s latest proposal moves us in the opposite direction. The company wants to charge customers based on their highest 15 minutes of daily energy use. NO OTHER STATE HAS ALLOWED THIS. That means a short burst of activity—like running the oven and air conditioner at the same time—could send a family’s bill skyrocketing. This unfair system would hit working families the hardest and discourage people from investing in rooftop solar panels that can help make our communities more sustainable. By reducing the financial benefits of solar, NV Energy’s plan would slow Nevada’s progress toward a cleaner energy future and increase our reliance on fossil fuels. This runs directly counter to the Public Utilities Commission’s statutory MANDATE to promote renewable energy, protect consumers, and support fair, transparent energy practices. Instead of punishing people for using electricity when they need it most, NV Energy should be helping Nevadans save energy and money—by supporting renewable energy, solar power and figuring out how to use distributed energy resources to lower electricity costs in our state. The PUCN had a second opportunity to reject this harmful proposal and adopt fairer rate structures that promote clean air and clean energy. Let's encourage them to reject the highest 15 minutes of use rate change but they didn't!!!!. Nevada has the sunshine, the technology, and the public support to lead the nation in clean energy. It’s time for our leaders to stand up for Nevadans, not corporate profits, and pass legislation to prevent NV energy from billing by the highest 15 minutes of use per day. Questions: why is NV Energy allowed @ a 10% return on investments when the bank pays regular people @0.1%. Why wasn't the state energy monopoly required to pay interest on the money they over charge Nevadans for decades.
