Getting better resources to Nevada's rural communities especially with health care for seniors

From "Welcome to The Nevada Forum!"

Go to the project

We keep getting phone calls about Medicare advantage plans and other things that allow seniors to get things that regular Medicare doesn't cover including help with groceries and we are denied that coverage because we live in a rural community. It feels like people especially senior citizens are looked down on because they live in a rural community. A lot of senior citizens don't want or like to travel outside of their community especially when they don't feel well and low income seniors who don't qualify for SNAP need help with buying groceries. In my opinion it feels like Nevada doesn't care about their elderly citizens.

I work with people who are from Ely, Eureka, and Tonopah who came to Vegas specifically to be closer to medical facilities. Most of the time it wasn't needed, but when you have an emergency and you're 2 or more hours away from the next closest hospital, you make life changing decisions to be closer to a big city. I understand the situation. But I come from California where even a mediocre facility is still better than what's here in a big city like Las Vegas. I'm utterly shocked at how bad the healthcare is here in the state. When you need a doctor, you could wait 3-4 months to be seen, especially when you're a new patient. When I first came to this city and state, My very first doctor was with Intermountain Healthcare. When I got sick my doctor would ask "Why are you here?! Go to the Emergency Department! I don't want to see you!" Second doctor took me off meds I had been on for 15 years without any substitutions knowing I still had long term issues. It's a vicious environment where healthcare is expensive and lacking in fancy buildings

And, don't you just love it when they do build housing for seniors and half of the apartments are upstairs with no elevator?
