We need to address the homeless crisis in Nevada in a real, functional way—not with quick, feel-good fixes.
It’s not as simple as putting people into empty buildings. That can create unsafe conditions and damage neighborhoods. At the same time, encampments in residential areas bring serious issues—unsanitary conditions, crime, and safety concerns—and can’t just be ignored.
A major part of this is addiction and mental health. There are people in severe crisis who aren’t capable of managing their own care. Addiction is widespread, and people are profiting off their suffering. If we don’t address that with real medical and mental health support, nothing else will work.
We need more structured facilities—not just shelters, but places that provide healthcare, addiction treatment, job training, and real guidance. There also need to be incentives that encourage people to leave the streets and move toward stability.
At the same time, there needs to be coordinated action to remove unsafe encampments while placing people into proper facilities.
And where is the community in all of this? There should be more outreach, more involvement, and a visible forum to actually work toward solutions.
Right now, it’s failing both the community and the people who are suffering.

I completely agree. It's absolutely unacceptable the way things are going on Nevada and it's appalling. There need to be gymnasiums or something like that are designated for sleep areas inside that are safe, dry, drug free and used when not in service for safe sleeping options. When you are homeless there are no places that you can legally sleep The facts are you are denying these people's human Rights. The they are either told to keep moving or they fall asleep and are arrested and now they are in court they can't pay a fine so they are thrown in jail and when they come out they are even more disgruntled than they were beforehand. They have also lost whatever belongings they had and anything sentimental. Even family treasure s they may have had left are thrown into the trash. Now the crisis is not getting any better the police are making it worse with they're stand offish additudes toward the homeless. But you cannot expect that people are going to be able to enter back into society with the treatment of them and the fact that they are always moving and in a constant state of chaos. I was homeless and let me tell you it's hard. You work your fingers to the bone to have what would not even be acceptable for poverty level and with the theft of your belongings and weather and police throwing everything away you can't get ahead. I would walk all day dumpster diving and bartering and trading to not even get close to getting what I needed and now I need to find clothes and a shower and medications and so on. All these resources are spread to far apart. There should be like a care complex where everything could be located in one place. There could be showers safe sleeping spots storage and lockers and a pantry and hot meal spot as well as job counselors and Internet and computers where they could job hunt and the could have a certain amount of time to do these things or they would have to re apply to stay there or to come back. That was an idea I had and that also fixes the homeless encampment problems
