Inter-City Regional Rail

A regional rail line connecting Las Vegas, Carson City, and Reno would unify Nevada’s major population centers into a single, connected economy—something the state currently lacks. Economically, rail would unlock growth between northern and southern Nevada, not just within them. While opening smaller communities like Tonopah and Hawthorne to new business and investment. Instead of isolated economies, Nevada could function as one integrated market—supporting tourism, jobs, and development statewide. Socially, it gives people real mobility beyond driving or flying. Not everyone can afford frequent flights or long car trips across the state. Rail provides a reliable, comfortable alternative that connects rural towns to jobs, education, and services in larger cities. Environmentally, rail reduces car dependency across long distances. Existing rail projects in Nevada are expected to remove millions of car trips and cut hundreds of thousands of tons of emissions annually, showing the scale of impact rail can have. A statewide rail system would multiply those benefits by shifting travel off highways like US-95 and I-80. Practically, Nevada is already moving in this direction. The state is investing in passenger rail (like the Brightline West project), and lawmakers are actively studying regional rail systems through new legislation and planning groups.
