Make polluters pay us

From "Welcome to The Nevada Forum!"

Go to the project

The Nevada legislature should pass a joint resolution in support of federal carbon pricing action. Nevadans shouldn’t have to live with price shocks and energy inflation. A carbon fee and dividend will drive energy innovation, giving every American community access to abundant, affordable clean energy at a predictable price. With a carbon fee, corporate polluters pay a fee for the damage their carbon pollution does to our environment. With a dividend, the money collected from the carbon fee goes directly to the people in the form of a monthly payment to use as we choose. A carbon fee and dividend: • Doesn’t cost taxpayers additional money. Corporate polluters pay for the damage they cause, which is fair. • Supports America’s economy by driving innovation that will put millions of Americans to work in good careers. • Gives the market a say: the economy decides the most efficient way to provide Americans with power. • Helps American manufacturers by putting a fee on high carbon goods sold in the U.S. by foreign manufacturers.

A first step toward building support for this great policy proposal might be to better understand the cost of fossil fuels to our economy, health and risk of disasters such as wildfire. Other states, including MD and ME have just passed legislation to do such a study.

This would be a fair way to help us through energy transitioning. Right now ordinary people are hostage to the oil and gas industry, and its wars and embargoes. This is a workable plan to get us away from oil and coal where possible, without draining working families' budgets. There will always be a place for fossil fuels, but it should be a small place.

Nevada has a huge opportunity with federal carbon fee and dividend policy, and here's why it matters for us. Nevada is loaded with solar, wind, and geothermal energy resources, most of them sitting on federal land. We also sit right next to California and Arizona, two of the biggest electricity markets in the country. A carbon fee would drive new business, jobs, and tax revenue into our state as clean energy investment flows in. On top of that, most Nevadans would actually come out ahead financially. The dividend rebates most households receive would exceed whatever extra they pay in slightly higher gas or energy prices. This policy isn't about new regulations or government picking winners and losers. It simply makes polluters pay for the damage they cause, which gives businesses and consumers a real incentive to find cleaner ways to do things. The Nevada Legislature should pass a resolution urging Congress to adopt this approach. The benefits to Nevada are real and significant, and it costs our state nothing.
