Problem: Lack of adoption of a plant-based lifestyle in Nevada

Why this matters:
Nevada has the opportunity to lead on one of the most urgent ethical, environmental, and public health issues of our time—ending the exploitation of animals for food.
Every year, billions of animals suffer and are killed unnecessarily, despite the fact that humans can thrive on plant-based nutrition. This is not just a personal choice—it is a systemic issue tied to violence, environmental degradation, and preventable disease.
Animal agriculture is a major contributor to climate change, water waste, and habitat destruction. In a desert state like Nevada, where water scarcity is already a critical concern, continuing to support such an inefficient system is unsustainable. Producing plant-based foods requires far fewer resources and aligns with responsible environmental stewardship.
It is also a major contributor to zoonotic disease. Many of the world’s most serious outbreaks—including COVID-19, avian influenza, and swine flu—are linked to the confinement, breeding, and slaughter of animals. Reducing reliance on animal agriculture is a critical step in lowering the risk of future pandemics.
From a public health perspective, diets centered around whole plant foods are associated with lower risks of heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Encouraging a shift in this direction could reduce healthcare costs and improve quality of life across the state.
Ethically, it comes down to recognizing that animals are sentient beings capable of suffering. A just society should not normalize unnecessary harm when better alternatives exist.
Call to action:
Nevada’s leaders should promote plant-based food systems through education, subsidies for plant-based agriculture, and increased access to plant-based options in schools, hospitals, and public institutions. Residents should be encouraged to transition toward a plant-based lifestyle for the benefit of animals, the planet, and their own health.

This will never happen. The meat industry is far too valuable. Nevada is more consumed by making money than pushing vegan lifestyles. Instead Nevada should focus on the water problem, having the worst education system in the country and the crime rate.
