Reducing the Role of Corporate Money in Nevada Politics
From "Welcome to The Nevada Forum!"
Go to the project
Nearly one-fifth (19%) of all donations to federal campaigns in 2024 were made by billionaires and their family members. At the Nevada state level, we have very little regulation around corporate contributions to state-level campaigns, with NV Energy and MGM among the top contributors.
When corporate money continues to grow its influence in federal and state elections, everyday citizens lose their voice, while often taking the brunt of the consequences of policies that benefit those same corporate donors. Our government is meant to serve its people first, not corporations.
There is a legitimate path to making this happen, by adopting a similar plan to Montana's Transparent Election Initiative. Because each state determines the powers it gives to its corporations, each state also retains the authority to decide to no longer grant its corporations the power to spend in politics. Nevada citizens simply need to decide they will no longer allow Nevada-based corporations to contribute any amount of money to any political campaign, if those companies wish to remain a Nevada corporation.
When corporate money exits politics, the billionaire class loses a significant lever they've used to sway policy at the detriment to all of us. It's time to put a stop to it with this simple, understandable, and achievable initiative.

I think this actually closely ties into the Nevadan educational rate of being #30 in the US and to the degree that many people here in Reno mocked No Kings without being able to articulate what a plutocratic oligarchy is.
On the topic of NV Energy specifically, they should be dissolved and turned into an actual public utility, which they are supposedly listed as. However, I sent a 54-page report of illegalities to the PUC and nothing was done, nor was there a response. And this comes after NV Energy not only gave its chief officers ridiculous benefits and pay bonuses, but also made sure to block solar competition here in Nevada, which would greatly benefit the state. They were also caught charging northern Nevadans (such as myself) to give breaks to wealthy southern Nevadans price breaks.
There are two federal bills that would be the hard part to topple; Citizens United v FEC, which gave the oligarchy the ability to buy politicians and McCutcheon v. FEC, which was the plutocratic version. This is also why the rich will donate to both sides of the two-party political spectrum; they ensure they have a pet politician regardless of who wins.

Out of state interstate an issue as well. Five or six years ago Tom Steyer, a billionaire from California funded the solar initiative which passed, requiring 50% solar production by some date, 2030 I believe.
He was obviously grooming Nevada to be an energy producer for California.
While personally I participate in solar production on my home. I am dismayed his NV Energy has played games either cogeneration issues. Manipulating it to their advantage and being supported in the effort by the PUC . The most recent ploy is peak billing which disincentives private solar priduvmction.
The only reasonable option now is to go Net Zero- off grid to avoid their manipulations all together.
Sad that corporate interests at NV Energy and the PUC. Don’t prioritize consumer rights.
