The mustangs are not feral, in fact contrary to misinformation they are a native species unlike cattle. Recent genetic research and fossil evidence increasingly support the argument that the horse (Equus caballus) is a native species to North America, rather than an invasive one. Paleontological records show the genus Equus evolved on this continent over 4 million years ago, and recent ancient DNA analysis suggests that the horses "reintroduced" by the Spanish in the 1500s were genetically identical to those that lived here prior to their supposed extinction roughly 10,000 years ago. Because they occupied the same ecological niche for millennia, advocates argue that wild mustangs should be legally classified as "native" rather than "feral," which would grant them significantly higher levels of federal protection under existing environmental laws.
