User 4088485 months ago My son has Level 1 autism, and because he looks normal, the school denied him ABA therapy since the Child Find program didn’t deem it necessary—even though his pediatrician and his autism specialist, Dr. Gaspar, had requested it. It’s unfair to deny a child the support he needs just because he looks or acts normal. They don’t realize the work and therapies that have cost me so much time and money to help my son. Right now, I don’t have health insurance, and I thought that at least the school could provide some support, but they denied him all types of therapy. I believe they should change the forms or the ways in which they evaluate neurodivergent children for Child Find.

User 4088485 months ago Education in Washoe County is terrible and of poor quality; bullies receive more support than the victims, and children aren’t taught moral values, good manners, and empathy from a young age. There are teachers who aren’t trained to handle neurodivergent children (autism, ADHD, etc.) in their classrooms, and they punish them by taking away recess; they are denied one-on-one support because they are seen as normal, counselors do not provide them with adequate support, they allow other children to harass them without serious consequences—they are only suspended—they do not care if all children learn to read and write because they say these children are problematic, but in reality their learning style is different, and special education teachers are also not well-prepared or trained; there are no cameras in classrooms with special needs children, my neurodivergent son was made to suffer at school until the day of his graduation by being prevented from speaking a few words like all his other classmates, simply because he didn’t raise his hand to say he wanted to participate—because when the teacher asked, my son wasn’t in the classroom, and he never knew why he was marginalized. If a child doesn’t have Medicaid, they are marginalized at school because they don’t want to spend resources for the benefit of their students.
